For a few years now, I have kept focusing on the human face as a subject of my artwork. Having never studied art formally - it wasn't one of my O'level qualifications as I didn't believe I could draw - it is a subject that both intrigues and scares me!
However, having tried and failed to draw to my own satisfaction with a pencil and paint, I then turned to charcoal and have found a medium that I enjoy and one that - quite unexpectedly - soothes me. I also find it an expressive medium that reflects the type of emotions I wish to convey.
Shown here are some of the charcoal drawings that have formed the basis for later artwork such as prints and collages. They are inspired by old photographs and prints. Reducing images to black and white helps me to think through the impact of light and shade.
